Perhaps a key takeaway from the family classic movie, The Shinning, is that all work and no play can make people a little unhappy.
Our hobbies, being whatever activity that brings joy or comfort outside of work, influence how we live, think, and interact with the world. They are a by-product of our personalities and allow our true passions to shine through.
So, of course, our hobbies have an influence over our jobs and vice versa. Maybe you’re an outdoorsman that guides hunts or an accountant that uses your paycheck to travel Europe in the Summer. We have jobs to either enjoy the life we live or fund a life we love.
The team members at 18Ninety Creative are loving life with a range of hobbies that suit their unique personalities. As a wheelhouse of creativity and shenanigans, let’s take a look at how their creative world turns.
SARAH SMITH: GRAPHIC DESIGNER
What’s your hobby/ after-work interest?
I enjoy traveling.
Why do you like this hobby?
Our experiences and what we learn help develop us into bigger and broader humans. Travel helps me have a broader outlook on life because I’ve been exposed to more things.
Where are your favorite places?
My favorite place has been Havana, Cuba. But then I also love Barcelona, Switzerland, and I’ve been very fortunate to go to Europe four times.
How does your job affect your hobby?
I think my background in art makes me interested in how different themes and periods have developed in different parts of the world. There are specific styles and, based on the location, those styles change with each client.
What are other hobbies/interests you enjoy?
Sports, reading, a good happy hour, skiing, being active.
If you had endless amounts of money and resources what hobby would you pick up?
If I had endless amounts of money I would have a private plane and live abroad as a bartender. I could fly anywhere and make fancy drinks with endless amounts of money.
DAVID DI DONATO (DDD): CREATIVE DIRECTOR
What’s your hobby/ after-work interest?
My hobbies change constantly. My hobby is that I find more hobbies. I like building RC cars and rockets. I also like repairing and riding my jet skis (emphasis on repairing).
What do you like about having all these hobbies?
I love learning new things and challenging myself to learn something new that’s non-digital. I like working with my hands and all my hobbies are in that realm.
Can so many hobbies get overwhelming?
Yes, my biggest problem is sticking with a hobby. They usually last like two or three months and then I’m on to something else. It also fills the garage which, of course, makes the wife happy (insert sarcasm here).
How does your job affect your hobby?
It shows me I can take on any challenge. I’m very adaptable. I can learn and teach myself just about anything. Every day is different and every client is different.
What are other hobbies/interests you enjoy?
Adventure; if it can’t almost kill me then it’s not fun. I also have fun taking my dog out or stargazing with my telescope.
If you had endless amounts of money and resources what hobby would you pick up?
If I had endless amounts of money I would go to space and build my own little space penthouse and hang out with my homies.
TORIN ALM: ART DIRECTOR / MEDIA STRATEGIST
What’s your hobby/ after-work interest?
After work, I enjoy hiking with my dog.
Why do you like this hobby?
I like this hobby because I get to explore the outdoors and bring along my furry friend who’s always happy to be outside.
Do you have a favorite hiking trail?
The Boise Foothills. It has loop trails so it’s nice to not just walk back and forth. I also like looking at the city skyline. You can be hiking in nature and then you turn and face the city skyline, which is pretty cool.
How does your job affect your hobby?
Since I’m sitting in a chair most days, it’s nice to get outside and exercise.
What are other hobbies/interests you enjoy?
Other hobbies I enjoy are snowboarding, hanging out with friends at a local brewery or friend’s house. In the summer, I’m a big fan of floating the river.
If you had endless amounts of money and resources what hobby would you pick up?
I would buy and drive exotic cars.
ERIN HIATT: COPY/ CONTENT WRITER
What is your hobby/after-work interest?
I love reading.
Why do you like this hobby?
I’ve always liked how creative stories can be. One story can make me laugh or cry and those are real emotions based on the actions of fictional characters that an author took the time to create and perfect. A good story feels real and that’s always fun to experience.
What’s your favorite genre?
Usually, I’m more interested in medieval fantasy or just fantasy in general.
How has your job affected your hobby?
In the past, I’ve just read fiction books, but since I’ve started my career I’ve tried to read more nonfiction that teaches me ways to improve my writing. So this job is actually making my “To Be Read” pile worse.
What are other hobbies and interests you enjoy?
Baking, eating, exploring with my husband, watching Rom Coms.
If you had endless amounts of money and resources, what hobby would you lie to take up?
Buy a private plane and explore secret gem destinations and eateries around the world.
JADE CHASE: BUSINESS OWNER
What’s your hobby/after-work interest?
My family means the world to me so I like to spend my time with my wife and son.
What are your favorite things to do with your family?
Whether we are hiking together, riding bikes, or doing some other outdoor activity, we try to stay active. We want to start golfing together, and in the summer we make sure to find time and go on a vacation before school starts up.
How does your job affect your hobby?
It’s difficult to turn off the creative juices, and I’m constantly learning from my family. They may not know it, but they are always serving as a focus group for my current projects! But, I also make sure to leave some work at home otherwise I would be focused on it instead of my family.
What are other hobbies and interests you enjoy?
Hunting, fishing, golf, and reading
If you had endless amounts of money what hobby would you pick up?
If I had unlimited amounts of money I would volunteer more or teach at a university.
